About Weston Mela
Weston Mela is a free family event that will celebrate the rich ethnic diversity of our community. Originally from South Asia, a mela is a cultural gathering and celebration.
Mela. / (miːlə, ˈmɛlə) / noun – from the Sanskrit “to meet”, related to “milana” the verb to mix, to tune, to come together and used to describe a large gathering of people; a fair or a festival.
Last year, 2023, marked the 35th Anniversary of the first Mela festival in the UK, which started in Nottingham in 1988. Since then many cities and towns now host their own Melas to celebrate the diversity of cultures that make up their community.
Many in the community feel that Weston in particular (and North Somerset in general) should also have the opportunity to experience and enjoy the music, food, arts and cultures of South Asia and other ethnic groups in our local community in a multi-cultural arts event.
As the first Mela in North Somerset, Weston Mela aims to bring the community together through food, music and dance, to share and celebrate culture from South Asia and other cultures represented in North Somerset.
With the help of our generous sponsors our aim is to create a sustainable, park-friendly, family-friendly, community-led annual event that can be enjoyed by all the family and that can promote and showcase the positivity and cultural wealth across our community.
